Standard Attic Conversions

Turn empty space into a room you'll love

A simple and cost-effective way to create a bright, functional new room in your home.

What is a Standard Attic Conversion?

A standard attic conversion is the simplest and most cost-effective way to transform unused roof space into a comfortable new room.

This type of conversion doesn’t require altering the roof line, making it a straightforward project that delivers big results with minimal disruption. Typically, a standard attic conversion includes the installation of roof windows to bring in natural light, a staircase for easy access, insulation to keep the space warm, and all the finishes needed to create a fully functional room.

It’s an ideal option if you want to add a bedroom, home office, or playroom without the need for major structural changes.

Benefits of a Standard Attic Conversion

A standard attic conversion is a simple, cost-effective way to add living space. By working within your existing roof structure, it avoids major building work, making the process quicker, more affordable, and less disruptive. With roof windows, insulation, and a staircase, you’ll gain a bright and comfortable new room for everyday use.

More affordable than other conversion types

Standard attic conversions don’t require altering the roofline, which means less structural work and lower overall costs compared to dormer or hip-to-gable conversions.

Because the existing roof is left as it is, the build process is faster and less invasive, allowing you to enjoy your new room sooner with less disturbance to daily life.

If your attic already has sufficient height, a standard conversion makes the most of that space, turning it into a comfortable and practical living area without major changes.

We use high-quality Fakro roof windows to flood the room with daylight, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere while also improving ventilation.

Whether you need an extra bedroom, a quiet place to work, or a fun space for the kids, a standard conversion provides a flexible solution that suits many different needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need planning permission for a standard attic conversion?

Some standard attic conversions don’t require planning permission, as the roofline isn’t altered. However, there are some cases where planning permission is required. For example, if you are adding windows, or if the space will be turned into a habitable room, like a bedroom. We will work with you in the initial enquiry phase to assess your attic and your attic conversion plans to determine whether or not you need planning permission.

On average, a standard attic conversion can be completed in 4 – 6 weeks, depending on the size of the project and any custom requirements. However, each project will be assessed on a case-by-case basis so timelines may vary.

The most common ways that we see our conversions being used for include bedrooms, home offices, playrooms, or hobby spaces – but the layout can be tailored to your needs.

Yes, some storage space will be reduced, but we can often incorporate clever built-in storage solutions to make the most of the remaining space.

A minimum headroom of 2.4 meters is required over at least 50% of the usable floor area for the room to be considered habitable. This measurement is taken from the finished floor to the underside of the roof. During our consultation, we’ll measure and advise if your attic is suitable for the vision you have for the space.
